The Fascinating History of the Duluth Playhouse
The Duluth Playhouse actually has three theaters: NorShor Theatre, the Playhouse Family Theatre, and the Underground Theatre. Each has its own personality and caters to all types of theatre-goers. However, the NorShor Theatre houses the Main Stage of the Duluth Playhouse. Back in the 1880’s the location was the home of Duluth’s Grand Opera House. After a fire claimed it, it was rebuilt in 1910 and staged vaudeville shows. Ownership changed several times in the following decades. Additions and renovations were made to the building. It was ultimately saved in 2012 by the NorShor Restoration Project. Now the lovingly renovated Art Deco theater has returned to its former opulence. You’ll feel like you step into a classic film when entering the radiant lobby with a classy bar and luxurious lounge areas. Grand art adorns the rich red walls and theater’s lush velvet seats make a romantic setting.
Another Awesome Season at the Duluth Playhouse
The Duluth Playhouse’s Main Stage has an amazing lineup for the 2019 and 2020 season. Heading into autumn, they offer up a lighthearted revue of Broadway’s favorite hero and villain songs. Songs from Hamilton, Wicked, The Little Mermaid and more come to the stage in the “Heroes & Villains of Broadway” show. The beloved family musical, “The Wizard of Oz”, brightens the holiday season. Pack your tissues for the sweet, funny and tear-jerking “Steel Magnolias” show. Bring your loved one on a delightful Valentine’s Day journey at “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” Best Musical Tony Award winner, “Monty Python’s Spamalot”, follows the hilarious misfortunes of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The live theater season ends with a great murder mystery “The Mousetrap”, and electrifying rock opera, “The Who’s Tommy.” The main stage also hosts a classic film series throughout the year. Enjoy great movies that were made for the big screen such as: Psycho, To Have and Have Not, A Streetcar Named Desire, It Happened One Night, Lawrence of Arabia and many more.
The Underground Stage also brings its own spectacular line up to the Duluth Playhouse. Located in the lower level of the historic Duluth Depot, it has loads of character packed into the 150-seat theater. Find classic plays, intimate musicals, in addition to fresh, new scripts. Fall kicks off the spooky season with Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror, “Dracula” and the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Laugh your way through the holiday stress in David Sedaris’ hilarious “Santaland Diaries.” For a bit of dark humor and scathing social commentary spend the night with “The Arsonists.” The Underground also hosts two festivals; the 15th Annual Short Shorts Film Festival and 4th Annual What She Said Festival. Then they round off the season with an interactive version of “Macbeth,” the epic adventure, “Around the World in 80 days” and lastly a sexy musical, “The Wild Party.”
