The Fascinating History of the Duluth Playhouse

View of red velvet seats in Duluth PlayhouseThe Duluth Playhouse actually has three theaters: NorShor Theatre, the Playhouse Family Theatre, and the Underground Theatre. Each has its own personality and caters to all types of theatre-goers. However, the NorShor Theatre houses the Main Stage of the Duluth Playhouse. Back in the 1880’s the location was the home of Duluth’s Grand Opera House. After a fire claimed it, it was rebuilt in 1910 and staged vaudeville shows. Ownership changed several times in the following decades. Additions and renovations were made to the building. It was ultimately saved in 2012 by the NorShor Restoration Project. Now the lovingly renovated Art Deco theater has returned to its former opulence. You’ll feel like you step into a classic film when entering the radiant lobby with a classy bar and luxurious lounge areas. Grand art adorns the rich red walls and theater’s lush velvet seats make a romantic setting.
