In a recent article in Travel + Leisure, Park Point Beach in Duluth was named one of the top “25 Best Beaches in the USA,” and we couldn’t agree more! This area is special for many reasons, but two important things to note are that Park Point Beach is the longest freshwater sandbar in the world, and it’s located on the largest freshwater lake in the world, the massive and beautiful Lake Superior.
In fact, this lake feels so large that sometimes you feel more like you’re at an ocean location, but there’s not a bit of saltwater to be found. This lovely beach on Lake Superior offers visitors a beautiful expanse of sandy beach, crisp, clean waters for swimming and kayaking, and a fantastic 4.4-mile Park Point Nature Trail that’s easy to navigate and offers stunning views and landmarks.
One of the ultimate ways to take advantage of this beach this summer is to stay at our lakeshore Duluth bed and breakfast on Lake Superior. As a guest, you’ll have 125 feet of Park Point Beach just steps from your guest room! You’ll start your day with our house-blend coffee, an elegant meal prepared in-house with seasonal ingredients, and your cozy guest room will be awaiting your return after a relaxing day at the beach or exploring all of the best things to do in Duluth. The Best Things to Do at Park Point Beach this Summer
Park Point Beach on Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, offers a beautiful escape that remains one of the Midwest’s best-kept secrets. This lengthy ribbon of sand stretches for miles, providing a respite from bustling city life (though still so close to the urban center!) with white sand, nature trails, and historical landmarks.
Here’s what makes Park Point Beach a must-visit destination, especially on a sunny summer’s day:
- Explore the Park Point Trail: Guests of our Duluth bed and breakfast have direct access to 125 feet of this sandy beach all to themselves. Those who enjoy walking can set out on foot down the shore. The Minnesota Point Lighthouse is at the end of the sandspit, about six miles from our B&B. There are plenty of opportunities along the way to stop off and take in the beautiful view.
- Birdwatching in Minnesota State Point Natural Area: Along the 5.2-mile trail that weaves through dense hardwood-pine forests with red and white pine, as well as sand dune beach habitats. Keep your eyes peeled for songbirds and common terns, and you might even catch a glimpse of a peregrine falcon.
- Paddling on Lake Superior: This beach location is fantastic for paddle boarding and kayaking. There are paddle-safe launch spots along the way and near the Duluth-Superior Sailing Association. If you’d like to take part in a guided paddling tour, Day Tripper Duluth offers a 90-minute tour of the shoreline in the Canal Park and Harbor area, and the meeting place is just across the street from our B&B.
- Spend the Day at the Beach: This sandy expanse is ideal for a leisurely day in the sunshine. Spread out your blanket, pack a cooler, and play, eat, drink, repeat! The nearby park areas have tables and grills if you want to barbecue. While the waters of Lake Superior are quite crisp all year long, you’ll see lots of people dipping their toes in the waves and swimming.
- Viewing Sunsets & Ships: As a guest at our Duluth bed and breakfast, you’ll have the best view from the beach on our property for sunrises, sunsets, and ship-watching. Seeing the massive ships go under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge is an iconic pastime, and Park Point Beach is a great place to take part.
